The 1996-97 Topps Finest Basketball set was released in two series. Series 1 contains card numbers 1 to 146.
Sets have bronze, silver and gold cards, which are considered to be short prints.
For 1996-97 Topps Finest Basketball, bronze cards are considered common.
Silver cards, which fall every fourth pack, are uncommon.
Gold cards, inserted one per box, are rare.
Parallel cards come in the form of Refractors. Bronze cards are found at 1:12 packs. Every other box has a Silver Refractor, while Gold Refractors are hit at 1:288 packs.
The 1996-97 Topps Finest Basketball set consists of a series of subsets, with Series I containing Apprentices, Gladiators, Maestros and Sterling.
The cards were issued with a clear film intended to help protect card surfaces. The film could be peeled off relatively easily, and collectors have never resolved the issue of whether the film SHOULD or SHOULD NOT be removed.
