American football has been a popular sport for a long time, and in that long history, a good deal of football cards have gone out to the public. While not as popular as baseball cards, these cards can still get a lot of attention and fetch a good price, especially if they’re rare or vintage. You’ll have a hard time getting your hand on any of these, but if you know what to look for, you’ll definitely have a better chance of adding one to your collection.

1935 National Chicle Bronko Nagurski

One of the oldest football cards fetching a high price in today’s trading card market is Bronko Nagurski’s 1935 National Chicle card. Initially produced nearly 90 years ago, it was one of the first true football cards to come out, so finding one today—especially one in good condition—isn’t easy.

The last sale of this card occurred in 2011, and it was only able to obtain a PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator) score of 2—the standard for high-quality cards is an 8 or higher. However, despite the card’s condition, the card still went for $350,000, making it the most valuable vintage football card of all time.

1958 Topps Jim Brown

This 1958 Topps card is the only official rookie card for Hall of Fame inductee Jimmy Brown. More than 3,000 of these cards are in circulation, but only a few are still in pristine condition: this Cleveland Browns player has only about 5 cards in circulation that have obtained a PSA score of 9. Therefore, these cards are both valuable and rare, and the latest sales price reflects this: at a Heritage Auction in 2017, one of the cards went for $336,000.

1957 Topps Bart Starr

Bart Starr was a top quarterback for the Green Bay Packers in the 1950s, and his popularity and skill directly connect to the rarity and value of his 1957 Topps card. This quarterback led his team to six division titles and numerous NFL titles, making him a favorite of every Packers fan. The last sale of this card was in 2017, when it went for $288,000. You can attribute that value to the card’s rarity and high quality. Other cards often have issues with fraying and coloring, but this Super Bowl I and II MVP has a few cards in great condition, boasting competent centering and printing quality.

These are some of the rarest vintage football cards that exist today, but you’re likely not going to stumble upon one of them anytime soon.
